Years ago, every family ate together at the end of the day at least. They would all congregate around the family dining table and discuss their days and their opinions on the current events while eating a meal. The meal could be anything from the traditional Sunday roast dinner, the cold meat leftovers and salads the next day, or something hearty like a stew or casserole. There was always a look of love when you look back on old pictures of families dining together, and in this modern day, it seems to be something we have lost.

Of course, things have dramatically changed today. Working routines have changed such as having night shifts or working late into the evening. Children have the technology to keep them occupied such as phones or tablets, and mothers just don’t seem to have the time. Due to the ever impending pressure of trying to be the perfect mum with the perfect house with the perfect family. Eating together as a family will just add to that pressure, won’t it? However, while it can’t be like it used to be, it is well worth trying to have at least one meal a week as a family. It encourages you to talk and communicate. I thought I would share with you some of the benefits of eating as a family and how you can try and incorporate it at least once into your weekly routine. It could make a huge difference to your family dynamic.
Have a place to eat together away from distractions
If you want to try and eat together as a family then it is worth looking at where you can do that in your home. If you can, utilise a dining room and invest in something where you can seat the whole family. For example, a dining table and 6 chairs would normally accommodate the average size of a family. If you haven’t a separate space, then try and create a dining area in a kitchen or living room. However, if you are really struggling then choose to have one night a week of eating together as a family in the living room without the distraction of the T.V.

It could encourage children to try new things
We live in a world where children are at their fussiest when it comes to food, and some experts will say this is because children lead by example. No example from parents eating the food means children are less likely to try new things. Of course, this isn’t a proven fact. But there is no harm in trying to see if there is an improvement by eating together as a family. On the nights you decide to do it, serve some different meals or include a new vegetable for them to try. As they see their parents eating, they may be more inclined to try.
Communication can greatly improve
Finally, communication in a world of technology now revolves around phone calls and text messages. So having a meal together at least once a week will encourage you all to talk about your days and feelings. It could even become one of the most enjoyable points of your week.
I hope this helps you to try and eat together as a family a little more often.
