For many holidaymakers, a large part of the appeal of a trip to the seaside is the opportunity it affords for relaxation. Get it right, and you will return from your beach holidays feeling renewed and refreshed. But doing this might require some special planning and actually approaching your time at the beach in the right way.
Choose the Right Time to Visit
When beaches are packed with tourists, it tends to be difficult to relax on them. You might spend more time dodging frisbees and listening to children screaming and dogs barking than you do lying down, listening to the sound of the surf.
By timing your visit to avoid these things, you might enjoy the time better. You might travel during spring or late summer, when the crowds aren’t as dense. Avoiding the school holidays might be critical.
On the other hand, if you are turning up during summer, it’s worth setting an alarm so that you can arrive just as the sun is rising. You might find fewer tourists and more time to yourself.
Pack Comfortable Essentials
What are you taking to the beach? You might find that a selection of just a few key items can vastly improve your chances of unwinding properly. A foldable beach chair, an umbrella, and a set of soft towels might all make a difference to your experience. Don’t neglect sun protection – include a parasol, a wide-brimmed hat, a pair of sunglasses, and sun lotion.
Engage in Relaxation Techniques
You don’t need to be an experienced yogi to unwind in this environment. Practice simple techniques, like deep breathing and mindfulness meditation. You might find that there are classes in yoga or pilates operating on certain beaches at certain times, and joining in can help to drive down your stress levels significantly.
Unplug from Digital Devices
Getting the best from the beach means devoting yourself to it with your entire mind and your entire body. Eliminating digital distractions is therefore pivotal. Put your phone to one side, and leave your tablets and laptops in the car. Don’t feel tempted to listen to podcasts or to play music. By unplugging, you’ll get much more benefit from your time at the beach.
Take Leisurely Beach Walks
A gentle walk along the beach can be tremendously supportive of human health, reinvigorating both the mind and the body. You’ll get a chance to truly appreciate the world around you – and, if you’d like to pick up the pace, you’ll also get the extra strain of jogging on sand.
Stay Hydrated and Nourished
Your time at the beach might not be quite as enjoyable if you aren’t properly hydrated. Take a flask of water with you. If you have a chiller, keep it in there. The same goes for any fruit or other healthy snacks you want to take. Don’t leave any litter at the beach – doing so risks ruining the environment for other people.
Create a Relaxing Ambience
Anything you can do to improve the local ambience is worth doing. This might mean taking along a good low-effort book or a bucket and spade so that you can get along with some therapeutic sandcastle-building.
The beach is an inherently relaxing environment, and by following some of the tips we’ve laid out here, you can get the best from it. In doing so, you’ll give yourself the best possible chance of coming home feeling refreshed and renewed.
