It’s 1999 I’m driving around in my Austin Metro with the window down (because it was broken) and singing my heart out to Why does it always rain on me? by Travis. I didn’t actually care if it was raining or not. Sleek hair was not in fashion and no one really knew what GHD’s were.
Fast forward 16 years and whilst it’s still a great song, it has a new meaning for me. Because now I do care if it’s raining. Rain means a school run with wellies and rain coats and rain covers for the buggy and no hands free for an umbrella. Sleek hair is in fashion and I spent 20 minutes straightening my hair before the small people got up. Rain sucks.
This is me after a wet school run. Even my pants were wet.
So here is my version of the Travis classic, sing along now…
Why Does It Always Rain On Me?
I can’t sleep tonight
The Weather tomorrow isn’t looking too bright
Still I can’t close my eyes
A wet school run is getting me all up tight
Sunny days
Where have you gone?
It was so much easier when the sun shone
Why does it always rain on me?
Is it because my kids watch too much TV?
Why does it always rain on me?
Even when the sun is shining
At 3 O’clock the rain starts pouring
I can’t stand a dark sky
My hair goes all frizzy and I look a fright
And because of a pig
Muddy puddles are the bain of my life
Sunny days
Where have you gone?
Wet school runs take twice as long
Why does it always rain on me?
Is it because I I gave the kids chicken dippers for tea?
Why does it always rain on me?
Even when the sun is shining
At pick up time the clouds start crying
Oh, where did the blue skies go?
And why is it raining so?
It’s so cold
I can’t sleep tonight
Rain forecast tomorrow and I’ve lost the fight
Still I can’t close my eyes
Wellies and umbrellas I’m so sick of this shite
Sunny days
Where have you gone?
I’m always shouting “This isn’t on”
Why does it always rain on me?
Is it because I lied about the tooth fairy?
Even when the sun is shining
It’s not for long and nothings drying
Oh, where did the blue skies go?
And why is it raining so?
It’s so cold
Why does it always rain on me?
Why does it always rain on….
Is it possible to hold an umbrella while pushing a pram?! I can’t. So I have to wear my husband’s hideous raincoat every time it rains! Hmmm maybe I should invest in a more attractive one, if such a thing exists!
its horrible when that happens!
Fabulous! I am SO with you on this – the school run in the rain is one of my worst nightmares!! Thank you for linking to Prose for Thought – it is lovely to see you. Hope to see you tomorrow xx
Changed days!
Brilliant – love it! It drives me mad that the showers always seem to wait just until it’s school run time and then give it all they’ve got.
Sods laws of parenting!
Haaaaaa! “Is it because I gave the kids chicken dippers for tea?”
I read the whole of this to the tune of the song. This is definitely a better version. Now I dare you to record and release it! Lol!
I reserve my singing for the shower and when I’m aline in the car. Even my kids yell me to stop!
This poem is hilarious and so true. For me, it’s all summed up in one line. “At 3 o’clock the rain starts pouring.” I have witnessed this phenomenon so many times!
still in my head, that’s an #effitfriday post in itself! x
Brilliant version! My heart always sinks when I wake up to rain, or see clouds gathering just in time for the school run. Being able to hold an umbrella again is an unexpected benefit of no longer needing a stroller all the time 🙂 #prose4t
I’m just telling myself I rock the drowned rat look!
Brilliant version!! It’s kind of a UK thing, rain on the school run, isn’t it?
#effitfriday
Hahaha!! I will make a point of singing this version every time I do the ( pre ) School run in the rain. Thanks for hosting 🙂
Hold onto your skirt 😉
Ah, love a bit of Travis. We had a fantastic moment when they were playing live at T in the Park and the heavens opened, seemingly just for that song. Fran might have to move over for your version though 🙂
We’re still wading through rainy season here so I feel your soggy pain. At least here even if your soaked to your underwear you don’t feel cold.
#fridayfrolics
Love this! Great effort 🙂 It always rains on me too and my hair is down to my bottom – not a great look #FidayFrolics
Haha brilliant! (though I hate Travis, & now it is in my head! :D) I’ve never liked rain, but it is just such a nightmare having to go out in rain with a pushchair, then try to get all the various things you have to take dry. & you have to just get soaked because umbrellas aren’t happening! #fridayfrolics
I have yet to find a coat with a hood that stays up!
I don’t think I’m familiar with that song either, but I’d listen to yours
I hated that song when it was out, your version is much better! I too am always getting stuck in the rain, it doesn’t matter if it’s glorious sunshine when I leave, by the time I get to school its hammering down!! Great song writing skills! Jodie x #fridayfrolics
I haven’t linked up for AGES because I’ve been working on my new website – normal service will be resumed next week when it will be live. Woo hoo! Anyway, I ready this post despite not being part of #FridayFrolics because it’s fabulous! Can’t stop humming that tune now. 🙂
Haha – this is hilarious! I used to love that song too! But I think yours is better. I love your expression in the picture too 🙂 #prose4t
Love it – a career as a songwriter in the offing perhaps? #FridayFrolics
Oh yes, move over Adele ; )
Hehe – those lyrics will be all I hear now when it comes on! #effitfriday
ha ha yep why does it do this!! Loved that song!! I think I should sing one that says ‘why does my battery always die on me!!’ ha ha the school run in the rain-stresssss #twinklytuesday xx
So funny! I don’t know that I have ever heard the original version of that song, but I sure loved yours! #twinklytuesday
hahahaha I had an Ausin Metro (well my mum did and I used it ALOT!) I love your blog it is so funny. Thanks so much for linking up. I think you’re just trying for a hat-trick of mentions in my favourites list 😉 #MaternityMondays
My Austin Metro was my mum’s too! Man that thing could go! Also broke down practically every week! Thanks for loving my blog 🙂
hahaha very clever and ooh the wet school run… we are not of school age yet but have dealt with the wet playgroup run and it is not fun… you have reminded me I need some new waterproof trousers so i am off to buy some… I may not look very fashionable in them but at least I will be dry (unless I have to run and then I may be a little sweaty, oh the glamour eh?) xx
Last week was a wash out – I looked exactly the same after the school run. Great song! X
