Once your child hits their teenage years, a lot of things are going to start changing. You’ll probably find that their bedroom no longer quite reflects their personality as much as it used to, and for this reason it can be a good time to think about redesigning their bedroom so that it is more suitable for them – what they are like as a person and their new interests and so on. In one sense, it might be that their bedroom simply needs maturing a little. Here are some tips that you might want to bear in mind regarding redesigning your teenager’s bedroom.
Brainstorming
It is definitely a good idea to brainstorm some ideas for your teenager’s new bedroom, and to make sure that you are both happy with the results, you should consider brainstorming together. There are bound to be ideas that they love that you don’t, and vice versa, so there is going to be more than a little compromising to be done here. But as long as you are happy to do that, you should find that you end up with a much better bedroom for them – one that you are happy to have in your home, and which they can enjoy too.
Color & Lighting
Two of the most important elements when it comes to designing any room are color and lighting. As long as you get these right, you’ll find it is much more likely that everything else just falls into place, so it’s something you are really going to want to think about. There are many ways to approach lighting: you might decide that floor lamps are the way to go, or you might want to encourage studying and work with desk lamps. You could also make sure that there is a lot of natural light – always a good move for mental health purposes.
Furniture
Of course, this is also a perfect excuse to upgrade the furniture, so you should consider doing this at the same time as well. If your child has had the same bed for a long time, this is going to be a good time to get them a new, bigger one. Not only does it make them more comfortable, but it can also help in making the room really feel like new. It is often a good time at this point to upgrade from a single to a double bed, for instance.
Themes
You don’t have to use a theme, of course, but it can be a useful way to bring all of your ideas together, so it’s at least something that you might want to think about. It can be a hard theme that is followed religiously, or just a soft theme – choosing certain colors over others, for instance. In any case, be sure to communicate about what you both think would work best. The right theme can make or break a bedroom design, so do take great care with it. If you can do that, you should find that the redesign goes quite well.
