Just like us, dogs can get sad and even depressed. If you notice that your dog lacks energy, sleeps more than usual, or has lost interest in his favourite dog food, it could mean there’s something wrong with him.
However, since the symptoms of a depressed dog can be similar to common symptoms of sickness or injury, you should first take him to the vet for a checkup. You need to ensure your dog’s appetite loss isn’t caused by an upset stomach or check whether he refuses to go on walks because his paws might hurt.
If the vet tells you there’s nothing wrong with your companion’s health, you’ll need to figure out how to cheer up a sad dog.

Take your dog on an early morning walk
Dogs can feel sad simply because their environment has suddenly changed. Dogs are creatures of habit, so getting accustomed to a new routine can take a long time. For example, if you recently moved to a new home, your dog could feel sad, worried, and anxious.
Of course, you won’t be moving back to your old home to try to make your dog feel better. However, you can try the following tips on how to cheer up a sad dog.
One easy thing you could do is take your dog on an early morning walk. Perhaps you won’t feel like getting up earlier than usual, and your sad dog might not get too excited about it either. But spending some time outside while the sun is shining should help brighten his mood and make him feel better for the rest of the day.
Spend some extra time with your dog
Dogs can get depressed after losing a close friend. If someone in your household has moved away, or if another one of your pets has died, you can be sure that your dog noticed and that this loss is affecting his mood and his well-being. But dogs can also get sad when a new puppy arrives in their home.
If you suspect your dog might be sad because he feels lonely or neglected, you can try to cheer him up by spending extra time with him. Go for long walks together, play with him, and cuddle on the couch. Show him that you love him, that you care about him, and that you want him to feel happier.
Give him a new toy and some treats
If you’re unsure why your dog is sad, you can cheer him up by giving him a new toy. Buy him a cute stuffed toy, a ball to play fetch with, or a puzzle toy that releases bits of dog food as he engages with it. This should distract him from his sadness.
You could also give him tasty dog treats whenever he plays with a toy or behaves normally. He might associate happy behaviour with rewards and try to earn more.
Explore a new place with your dog
Perhaps your dog is acting depressed because he’s bored. He might need some exercise and mental stimulation. You could help him feel better by taking him on an adventure. Take him to a new place he has yet to go, whether it’s a beautiful park, a hiking trail, or a dog-friendly beach.
Try a new activity with him and have some fun together. When you get home, if you both feel exhausted, watch a movie together or nap.
Take your dog on a doggy playdate
If your dog feels lonely after losing a dog friend, you can cheer him up by taking him on a doggy playdate. If one of your friends has a dog, let them play together in an area where they can safely run around and have fun.
Alternatively, you could bring your dog to a dog park to allow him to meet other dogs. Just make sure they match his size and energy, and be sure to supervise them at all times.
Give your dog some space
Your sad dog may feel much better after resting and adjusting to his new routine. In some situations, the best thing you can do is give him some space.
Pet him and play with him when he comes to you. But if he’s lying in his bed or his crate, leave him alone. In time, he should feel better and happier.
