My approach to skincare used to be quite hap hazard. It basically consisted of cleanse and moisturise in the morning and that was it. Occasionally I would commit to making more of an effort in my night time skin care routine, but it never really lasted beyond a week.

A few months ago a friend became a Body Shop consultant and set up a facebook group. I joined to support her, but hadn’t really used any Body Shop products for years. Not since it was all strawberry bubble bath, lip balms and bath pearls. But I have learnt so much about my skin and how to look after it since joining this group. I wish I had known this stuff years ago, but 41 is not to late to start taking proper care of my skin!

I’ve been following this routine as recommended by my friend for a few months now and I love it. I look forward to my little night time routine, and I have noticed a huge difference in my skin. It feels smoother, and looks brighter.

An Eight step routine may sound a lot, but it takes me five minutes. And five minutes for myself in a day isn’t a lot.

So this is my routine, along with some products that I love…

8 step night time skin care routine

Step 1: Cleanse

The first part of my night time skin care routine is an oil based cleanser to get rid of any makeup and dirt. My favourite is the Clinique take the day off balm. I also use a facial buffer brush to really work this into my skin.

Step 2: Cleanse Again

Yes the second step is to cleanse again. This time using a cream based cleanser. I am currently using Vitamin C cleansing Polish from the Body Shop. The benefits of double cleansing are that the first cleanse gets rid of dirt, make up and excess oils. The second cleanse rehydrates and smooths the skin and allows other products to penetrate more deeply.

I love anything with vitamin C for my skin. It really gives it a lovely glow and smells amazing.

Step 3: Tone

I’ve always struggled with toners as have found a lot of them quite harsh. My friend recommended the Aloe Calming Toner from The Body Shop and it’s really gentle. The benefits of toner are that it re balances your skin, gets rid of stubborn dirt, and forms a protective layer on your skin to protect against environmental contaminant entering your skin.

The Aloe Toner is really gentle and doesn’t dry my skin out at all.

Step 4: Exfoliate

This step shouldn’t be done every day, but it is essential for removing dead skins cells so your other beauty products can do their job properly. I tend to exfoliate twice a week. I mix between two products, both from The Body Shop.

The liquid peel is gross but satisfying. It comes in a number of different Body Shop ranges. I am currently using the Drops of Youth one, but I want to try the Vitamic C one or the Drops of Youth one too.

I also use the Vitamin C Microdermabrasion. It leaves my skin looking fresh and bright.

Step 5: Essence

This was something I had never heard of before, but has very quickly become my number one beauty product. The idea of an essence is that it makes your other beauty products work harder. It penetrates deeper into the skin, and draws your other beauty products with it. It plumps up the cells, hydrates and primes your skin ready to make the most of your moisturiser. My skin can be on the dry side, but since using The Drops of Youth Essence my skin feels so hydrated and smooth.

Step 6: Moisturise

I use a night time moisturiser as it’s a bit heavier and I’m of an age where I am trying to deter the wrinkles! Currently I am using the Oils Of Life night time moisturiser from The Body Shop. I also love the Vitamin C Moisturiser from Beauty Pie, but I have switched this one to my morning routine.

Step 7: Eye Cream

A good eye cream is gentle, but hydrates, reduces puffiness and, plumps out to reduce those fine lines and wrinkles. If only they could get rid of the dark circles too! I am currently using Wake which is lovely and light.

Step 8: Breakouts

The final step of my night time skin care routine is to tackle any problem areas. My chin can be prone to breakouts. Especially when I am due on. I use a spot treatment on any blemishes to try and keep them at bay!

For the Mount Vesuvius style eruptions I love Dots For Spots. They are virtually invisible to wear and really calm things down. For more minor breakouts, I use tea tree oil from The Body Shop. The only downside is that I hate the smell of tee tree!

Bonus step: Face Mask

On a weekend I will also do a pore refining face mask. I am currently using The Body Shop Hymalian Charcoal mask which is great and always gives my kids a frigh!. My all time favourtite face mask is the Sand & Sky Australian Pink Clay which leaves my skin glowing and so soft. It jyst has a slightly bigger price tag!

  1. Gosh I used to love Body Shop bath pearls back in the day and I remember getting a lip balm once in a party bag, I felt so grown up! Excellently timed post as I’m on the lookout for a facial exfoliator and like the look of the Vitamin C microdermasion one!

  2. That is funny. I was the same as you – a big fan of Body Shop back in the day, but not a recent user. Unlike you I have yet to break into their new product world. It looks gorgeous. Looking forward to trying some of these out. #Mischiefandmemories

  3. After your recommendation, I am going to try some of the products listed #mischiefandmemories@_karendennis
