Parenthood teaches you a lot. How to function on no sleep. How to eat one-handed. How to get a toddler into a car seat when they’ve suddenly gone full plank.
And, of course, how to survive the nappy change.

Nobody warns you that something so small could produce something so… powerful!
One minute you’re congratulating yourself on a smooth change, the next you’re caught in the crossfire of a surprise wee, whispering “please don’t roll” while desperately trying not to get kicked in the face.
According to new research by baby brand Colief, one in three parents have been caught mid-change by a rogue wee or poo. A quarter admit they’ve forgotten spare nappies entirely (rookie mistake, but we’ve all been there). And 16% have had to wrestle a dirty nappy out of their baby’s hands.
Restaurants top the list of the most dreaded places to change a nappy…
Followed by public transport, which makes sense…Nothing says “stress” like trying to change your baby in a train toilet roughly the size of a cereal box while other passengers politely pretend not to hear the chaos inside.
And even though we’ve all done it a hundred times, only 16% of parents say they’re confident about changing nappies away from home. The rest of us? We’re winging it and hoping the changing mat doesn’t slide off the table.
Then there are the unique locations parenting throws at you – changing nappies on car boots, picnic benches, shopping trolley seats. It’s always when you’re furthest from a bin, the wipes have mysteriously evaporated, and the baby chooses that moment to show off their rolling skills.
Nappy rash…
But while we’re laughing (and crying) through the chaos, there’s a quieter issue many of us deal with – nappy rash. Colief’s research found that nearly four in five babies experience it, yet only 27% of parents use a preventative product every time.
Honestly, I get it. You’re already juggling nappies, wipes, wriggling babies, and a clock ticking down to the next nap meltdown. The idea of adding one more step to the process feels impossible. But when your baby’s skin is sore, red, and angry, you’d do anything for a way to stop it happening again.
That’s why I was intrigued by the Colief Nappy Care Spray – a spray-on, no-touch alternative to the thick creams we’ve all smeared on in a panic. It uses Hypochlorous Acid (HOCI), a naturally occurring antimicrobial that helps fight bacteria and fungal infections, including Candida. It’s fragrance-free, alcohol-free, and dermatologically tested, so it’s gentle enough from birth.
But here’s the bit that parents will actually care about: it’s fast. You just spray and go. No sticky fingers, no crying baby waiting while you fumble with cream lids, no greasy residue. There’s something oddly liberating about a nappy change that won’t end in a full body workout.
We all have our disaster stories…
The public poonami, the day you ran out of wipes, the car-boot change that felt like a survival mission. But those moments don’t make us bad parents. They make us real ones.
And maybe that’s what parenting is really about — doing your best in ridiculous circumstances, finding the humour when you can, and accepting that some days the victory is just getting everyone clean(ish) and vaguely on time.
So next time you find yourself whispering “please just stay still” to a giggling baby on a changing mat in a questionable public toilet, remember: we’ve all been there. And if a simple spray can make the whole thing cleaner, quicker, and a little less traumatic — that’s a win.
Colief Nappy Care Spray is available now on Amazon (£11.99).
