We love a few family games over the Christmas period. So much so that it has become our tradition to buy a new one every year. I am not a competitive person in any way in my life, until it comes to board games. I have no idea why I am like this! But every year my main goal is to beat my little brother, and his goal is to beat me. We are both in our forties! Here is a guide to the best family games to play this Christmas, guaranteed to make you giggle, create some memories, and produce some healthy sibling rivalry!
1 Obama Lama
This is one of my favourite games to play. It’s fast paced and very funny. And it’s all about rhyming. You will either be given a clue to solve such as “A Labrador and Poodle mix is enjoying a long piece of Chinese pasta”. The answer is of course “a Labrdoodle eating noodles”. Or you might have the answer and have to come up with your own description for your teammates to guess. For example you might have a card that says “Lorraine Kelly Eating Jelly”. So you might say “a female breakfast TV presenter is eating a wobbly dessert”. It’s a game that is hard to describe but lots of fun to play.

2 Family Quiz Night
Who doesn’t love a quiz. I also happen to have a child who wants to be a quiz show host so delights at asking the questions. It’s the perfect way for the whole family to compete and learn while having fun.

3 Spot The Intro

4 Cards Against Humanity
The game where loose morals and crossing lines makes you a winner! I have played this game several times with friends, but I have not been brave enough to play it with family members yet. Maybe the family version?
5 Bangarang
This high-energy, cooperative game challenges players to guess the secret word using clues like mimes, sounds, and drawings. Fun for the whole family, It’s like a mixture of charades, soundiculous and pictionary in one game. So there’s something for everyone and great for a multi-generational get together.
6 Speak Out
A few years ago this game was a must have for the festive season. Impossible to play without getting a stomach ache from laughing so much. You wear a mouthpiece that holds your mouth open and you have to say a phrase whilst your team mate tries to decipher what you are saying. It’s a great game for giggles.
7 Tension
In tension you have to name 10 things from a category you are given such as “animals beginning with P”. You have to match the 10 items that are on the card. It is so much harder then it sounds. We played this with friends on a camping trip and will definitely be playing it over the festive season.
8 Traitors
I am looking forward to trying this one out at Christmas. I am a huge fan of the show. I’m not sure how good I would be as a traitor. I think my face would give me away! Players are randomly assigned the roles of The Faithful or The Traitor at the beginning of each game. The Faithful’s must collaboratively deduce The Traitors’ identity and vote them out whilst The Traitor must cleverly deceive them to win the game. There is even a digital interactive element to the game.
9 Taskmaster
I bought this for my husband a few years ago as he is a huge fan of taskmaster. Packed with hilarious tasks, it’s an easy-to-play game that requires only household items and guarantees endless fun. It’s lots of fun to play and one of those games that’s better the more people that are playing. It’s great for a big family gathering.
10 Pictionary
You can’t go wrong with a classic like pictionary. But you can make it even better by using a big white board or an easel so everyone can see what you are drawing.
