We all know that practising mindfulness is good for us. But I get it. Finding the time can be hard. Between school runs, work, helping the kids with homework, laundry, cooking, life admin. quality family time, time with your partner, walking the dog, drinking 2 litres of water, exercising, reading, checking in on your parents, it can all be a bit overwhelming. Where are you supposed to find time for mindfulness? It can be hard to find time and prioritising anything for ourselves goes to the bottom of the list. But I want to show how you can fit mindfulness into your life without it feeling like a chore. And hopefully some of these 5 minute daily mindfulness activities will become a habit and part of your daily routine.

5 Minute Daily Mindfulness Activities For Your Morning Routine
Getting up just 5 minutes earlier can give you time to add some mindfulness into your daily routine.
Body Scan / Senses Scan
A mindfulness body scan is a meditation technique that involves paying attention to different parts of the body in a gradual sequence from head to toe. The goal is to simply notice what each part of the body feels like, from any sensations of pain or discomfort to sensations of warmth or relaxation. You can practice this while lying down, sitting, or in other restful positions, the body scan can be an effective way to connect the mind and body.
Overall, a mindfulness body scan is a practical and accessible meditation tool that offers significant mental and physical health benefits, enhancing well-being through improved self-awareness, stress management, and a deeper connection to one’s own body.
An alternative is a senses scan. Lie or sit somewhere comfortable, and one at a time engage each of your senses and notice what you can see, hear, feel, smell and taste. It’s a great way of focusing on the present moment.
Both these practices can be done in 5 minutes and will set your day off to a great start.
Positive Self Talk
How many times do we look in the mirror and think negatively about ourselves. We say things about ourselves that we wouldn’t dream of saying to anyone else. We should all be much more mindful of that inner voice inside our heads. Particularly when they are giving us a critique. This mindfulness activity doesn’t need to add any more time to your day. When you are getting ready and looking in the mirror simply be mindful of your thoughts about yourself and steer away from negative thinking. Instead treat yourself with kindness and opt for some positive affirmations rather than put downs. Telling that little voice to be quiet does wonders for your self confidence.
Plan Time
At some point in my morning routine I will refer to my calendar and my to-do list and plan things for the day, or a few days time. If I don’t plan things, they don’t happen. There are some mindfulness activities that take longer, but do me the world of good. These things will be different for everyone, but mine are painting and gardening. I have to make a conscious effort to make time for these activities. And whilst I do not have time for these activities everyday, I can spare 5 minutes a day to ensure I plan some time later in the week for these things.
5 Minute Daily Mindfulness Activities For Your Lunch Time Routine
The great thing about these tips is that you can do them all whilst eating your lunch…
Fresh Air
5 minutes of fresh air can do wonders for your mental health and clear your mind. It doesn’t matter whether you spend it walking or sitting. Neither does it matter if you spend it in a city, the country side, the beach, or your back garden. Just go outside and get some fresh air.
Text a Friend
Text or call a friend. A 5 minute chat or text exchange can make you both feel great. Interacting with friends can trigger the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with feelings of pleasure and happiness. Making it a daily habit is a great way of keeping in touch with people as time flies by so quickly.
Mindful Eating
By mindful eating, I absolutely do not mean calorie counting, or points, or syns, or any other diet evil. It doesn’t matter what you eat. Mindful eating is about slowing down, savouring the taste, and savouring your enjoyment. Rather than wolfing some food down at break neck speed because you need to move onto the next task. Savour that delicious cheese on your pizza, enjoy every last crumb of your sandwich, taste the freshness of your crisp salad. Feel the chocolate melt on your tongue. Enjoy the moment.
5 Minute Daily Mindfulness Activities For Your Evening Routine
At the end of a busy day we all just want to switch off and veg out. Mindfulness activities can really feel like a chore at this stage of the day. But going to bed 5 – 10 minutes earlier to practice some mindfulness can improve your sleep and make you feel calm and rested before bed. So much so that you will find your evening mindfulness activities become nonnegotiable in your life.
Gratitude Journal
Keeping a gratitude journal and taking 5 minutes at the end of each day to write can really help you achieve a positive mindset and shift your outlook on life. Even if you’ve had a really crappy day, you can find something to feel grateful for; being grateful that you got a parking space, or that you felt the sun on your face.
Reflecting on positive experiences and feelings of gratitude before bed can improve the quality of sleep. It helps calm the mind and reduce worrying thoughts that can interfere with sleep. Studies have also shown that gratitude journaling helps reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Guided Breathing
One of my personal favourite mindfulness activities is guided breathing meditations. 5 minutes and I feel so calm and relaxed afterwards. You can find lots of guided breathing meditation online. I use the calm app for mine.
Wash Your Face
So I’m guessing that this is part of your daily evening routine anyway. But I always find when I am feeling stressed or anxious my skin care routine is the first habit I break. But washing your face and applying a moisturiser is an act of self care, and self care is a big part of mindfulness. Just a few minutes at the end of each day to focus on you, with the added benefit of glowing skin!
Self Development
Okay I lied, this one is 10 minutes, not 5. But it’s important. We can often lose sight of our passions in our day to day lives. And certainly we can lose a sense of ourselves when we become parents. Giving yourself 10 minutes a day for self development can make you feel more you! Connecting with what you love, discovering who you are, learning new things. There is a vast amount of podcasts free to listen too on pretty much any subject you can think of, and they are a great low effort way for self development and growth.
Conclusion
I’m guessing the fact that you clicked on this article means that you are interested in doing some mindfulness activities. This list may seem overwhelming, but you don’t have to do them all. Start with one and see how you get on. Hopefully you will see that you can add some mindfulness activities into your daily life that don’t take lots of time.
