We live in a Victorian house, which has a beautiful big bay window in our living room. Our main DIY project this year is the living room, which includes new sofas, building a window seat for the bay window, and getting shutters. We thought long and hard about investing in shutters, this post looks at the benefits of them and why you might want to consider shutters for your windows.

We live on the main school road and there are a lot of pedestrians passing our house. It’s important for us to have something at the window fro privacy. Shutters for your windows are a great way of creating that privacy. I hate nets and voiles and wanted something that looked more stylish, and better quality.

Shutters come in a range of real wood, engineered, PVC and MDF. Whatever material you choose they are built to last and are durable. With most shutters being made to measure for your window the finish created has a luxury quality. They will definitely outlast blinds and curtains.
Stylish
You can play around with the design of the shutters and the colour to create a stylish look that suits you and your home. We are opting for no handles as I felt this gave a cleaner, crisper look. You can even choose how big the slats are. I was pleasantly surprised by how much design input we could have.
Energy Efficient
If you are looking to reduce your heating bills, and for your house to be more energy efficient you should definitely choose shutters for your windows. They can reduce heat loss by up to 62%. Shutters are designed to keep homes warm in the Winter and cool in the Summer.
Light
I had a preconceived idea that shutters would block out light, but having seen them in spaces now I was wrong. I am confident that our living room will still be light and airy once the shutters are installed. One of the benefits I love is how adaptable they are. You can close some sections and leave other sections open. So if for example the sun was shining onto the television we currently have to close the curtains. But with shutters you can just close the area required. No other window dressing is this flexible.
Noise
Another benefit of shutters over other window dressing is the noise reduction they give you. A great benefit if you live by a busy road, or maybe work shifts.
Cost
There is no denying that shutters are an investment. But you can reduce the cost whether opting for cafe style shutters or full height shutters by opting for DIY shutters. With this option the shutters are made for you, but you do the measuring and installation yourself. It’s also worth considering your shutters will last a long time, which year on year makes them great value.
I can’t wait to get my shutters and show you all what they look like. The only downside is I think I am going to want them in every room of my house!!!
