Get the best nights sleep with a cover-less duvet

I was sent a Night Owl cover-less duvet from The Fine Bedding Company to review. I thought it would be a bit of a time saver when it came to changing the bed linen, but found it was so much more than that. To the point that I now tell everyone I meet to get a Night Owl cover-less duvet!

So let’s start with the obvious: Changing a duvet cover is one of the worst jobs.

Everyone has their preferred way. You might turn the duvet cover inside out, grab the corners, and then flap your arms like you are trying to take off until you are a hot sweaty mess. Maybe you are more of a stuffer which normally ends in equally sweaty results. Or maybe you do that weird roll up hack that I can’t perfect, no matter how many You Tube videos I watch.

Changing the bed linen is a physical job, and whilst that clean sheets feeling is divine, it looses it’s sheen when you strip the bed in the morning and then forget about it until you go to bed and realise you still haven’t put the clean bed linen on.

So it’s easy to see the benefits of a cover-less duvet when it comes to changing the bed linen. No more hot sweaty mess.

The benefits of a cover-less duvet on your sleep

These are the parts I wasn’t expecting, and the reason I am a complete convert to the cover-less duvet.

Lightweight

Firstly, I am a fidget. I’m one of those who do laps of the bed during the night. This normally involves getting a bit tangled in the duvet and my long suffering husband clinging onto his corner like a life raft in a stormy sea. We have a standard double bed, but I opted for the king size duvet so my husband could have a bigger corner to hold onto. The cover-less duvet is so lightweight, so when I fidget every night, I don’t take the duvet with me. It just kind of glides over me. I wake up and the duvet is the right way round and fully on the bed. And my husband is fully cocooned and not gripping onto his corner.

Temperature

The Night Owl duvet comes in a Summer tog rating of 4.5, or a year round rating of 10.5 tog. My temperature fluctuates during the night more than a teenagers hormones. And as I rapidly approach perimenopause I know this is only going to get worse. One minute I am boiling hot and throwing the covers off in protest, the next I am freezing cold and cocooning myself. I really am a delightful bed partner. For full disclosure I snore too. My husband is a lucky man!

The cover-less duvet does a quite frankly magical job of always being the temperature I need. Since using it I have not once woken up too hot, or too cold. I went to bed the other night after having been cold all day. That kind of cold that only a bath can warm. The kind of cold my mum would call “cold to the bone”. I didn’t have time for a hot bath before bed, but within minutes of being under the cover-less duvet I was warm and cosy. And this is from the girl who normally needs an electric blanket and a hot water bottle to warm up.

Equally I didn’t wake up feeling like I was in the depths of hell because it was so hot. Like I said, magic!

Comfort

The Night owl duvet is beautifully soft. I was sent the Night Owl natural cotton waffle cover-less duvet. The outer is 100% pure BCI cotton. a soft, plain sustainably sourced cotton reverse with a textured waffle top. It is really comfortable to lay both under and on top of.

Impact on my sleep

My quality of sleep is normally very poor. I wake up a lot, and often once I wake I can be awake for a long time. As mentioned I fidget a lot and my temperature is up and down. Since using this cover-less duvet my sleep has improved so much. I am not waking so much. I am still a fidget. But I’m not waking because I am too hot or too cold.

I went away for a night after using the cover-less duvet and the traditional duvet felt heavy and too hot and I had a really uncomfortable nights sleep. I couldn’t wait to be back in my own bed with the Night Owl duvet.

Care of the cover-less duvet

Another benefit to the Night Owl cover-less duvet is that you can chuck it in the washing machine. The care guide says the compressible fibres will easily squash into a 7kg capacity washing machine. My machine is a 7kg drum and it was a tight fit. The kind of squeeze where I watched the wash cycle for the first 5 minutes in case the door popped open! But it didn’t and it was fine.

The care guide says tumble for 120 minutes. However the duvet was still wet. This might be because my machine is a washer dryer. We hung it over the Bannister and it took a further 12 hours to dry completely. No doubt this drying time will be shorter in the Summer when the house is warmer. Although it took a while to dry, for me the pro’s of this duvet far outweigh the cons.

Summary

Final verdict on the cover-less duvet

I love it. It’s one of the best things I own. I don’t think I could ever go back to a traditional duvet now. I will be buying them for the kids beds. Especially Big who every few nights somehow manages to get his duvet all the way to the bottom of the duvet cover so he is just left with the cover on his body and a big ball of duvet at his feet. How??!!
