Let me start by saying this post is in no way endorsed by Ikea, but I just love their Antilop high chair so much I had to tell you. And here’s why…

I’ve tried my fair share of high chairs over the years with my boys.  I started with a little wooden one.  It matched my dining room furniture and folded up small so hardly took up any space.  As you may have guessed from my description it was bought with expectant parent excitement.  Oh how I laugh at us back then now!  What did we know?  Nothing!  At that point in time we had no clue how to take care of a baby let alone what it would need to sit in when we fed the thing!

The cute wooden high chair that matched my life before children was so small I couldn’t actually fit my baby in it!  And although wood looks nice, plastic is much easier to clean.  They’re onto something with all those plastic baby toys you know!  Now I know we all eat off wooden tables and they clean up pretty good.  But I’m assuming you haven’t mashed banana, smeared bolognese or rubbed broccoli into yours?  In case you haven’t yet reached the weaning stage, it’s not pretty.  Mud wrestling is a cleaner affair.  Plastic is the way to go.  Just another little tip for you, those non spill bowls – they spill!

I’ve tried high chairs that are so big, they take over the kitchen, and you lose your baby in them.  They end up at just the right height to eat the tray, and it’s impossible for them to reach anything themselves.  You just see a little nose and eyes with arms flailing about helplessly trying to grasp something to rub into their hair.

We’ve used high chairs with straps so complex we couldn’t actually do them up and gave up and fed the baby in his buggy.  We’ve even used ones with no straps and have had to feed the baby whilst simultaneously holding them in place to stop them sliding out of their seat like a drunk Uncle at a wedding.

I’ve seen a high chair that cost more than a fitted kitchen, and it was made out of chrome, seriously, just think of the finger prints!  And have you seen the ones that attach to the kitchen worktop?  They just freak me out!

When I found the Antilop high chair in Ikea I thought it was going to be rubbish.  I mean a high chair that costs a whole £13 can’t be any good right?  Wrong.  It’s amazing.  It is without doubt the best high chair I have used.  Perfect size, easy to clean, easy to put together, both my children have loved them and it’s an absolute bargain.  What’s not to love.  In fact I love it so much I have two, and if my husband would let me get away with it I would have a third in the boot of the car and use it when we were out and about!

  1. It is absolutely brilliant! We bought one years ago and like you couldn’t believe that such a cheap one would do a good job but it was absolutely perfect, I loved it!

  2. I have the same one and it’s great. I’m amazed that there are still other high chairs on the market as everyone I know has this one and raves about it.

  3. I am filing this knowledge away for a day in future when I am given grandchildren…even if they don’t want it for their house being the expectant parents they’ll be then, I’ll buy it for mine! Thanks for the tip!
