Everybody knows that it’s important to keep your house clean. If you don’t, then you risk getting sick because there are higher levels of bacteria around. However, you might not realise that you’re missing some important areas when you do your spring clean. If you don’t catch these things, you could be putting yourself and your family at risk of all sorts of health problems. We all like to think that our home is spotless, but the unfortunate truth is, it probably isn’t as clean as you think it is. But don’t worry, this list of hidden dangers can help you to make sure that you don’t miss a single spot.
Hopefully, you’ve been washing your bed sheets regularly. If you haven’t then you’re almost certainly putting yourself at risk of health problems. But even if you have, you might not have been doing it often enough. People always underestimate the amount of dirt and bacteria that you find in there. You shed a lot of dead skin when you sleep and it all collects in your sheets. Leaving it all in there can seriously increase any problems that you have with allergies or other skin conditions. If you leave it too long, all of that bacteria can make you sick as well. If you want to make your home cleaner and more comfortable, you should be washing them on a hot cycle at least once a week.
Obviously, if you’ve got black mould growing on the wall, you’re going to get rid of it. But there are often hidden strips of mould that you don’t notice. This is a big problem because black mould can cause all sorts of serious problems with breathing and if left untreated, you could end up in the hospital. As soon as you spot even the smallest sign of black mould, call in some damp specialists to get rid of it. Some places that you might not think to look for mould include the showerhead, gaps between tiles, shower curtains, and around window panes. If you keep finding spots in the same rooms, try to ventilate them a bit better. As long as you look out for these secret spots and clean them regularly, you should be able to keep on top of it.
The bath mat is probably one of the dirtiest areas in the house that you wouldn’t even have thought about. Every time you step out of the shower you get the mat wet, and it soaks up all of that water. The warm, damp conditions are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria so over time, it will become full of germs. It’s difficult to avoid this but the issue is that most people never even consider washing it. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that it’s clean because you’re clean when you get out of the shower and step onto it. You don’t need to wash it that often, but putting it through the washing machine once or twice a month will get rid of all of that dangerous bacteria.
Making sure that anything that comes into contact with your food is clean should be top of your list. Contaminated foods are one of the biggest causes of illness but it can be easily avoided. You’re probably spending a lot of time cleaning surfaces and kitchen equipment down, but you’ve probably forgotten about the fridge. Cleaning out the refrigerator is something that most people do once a year, and when they do, it’s full of gunk and mould. When you’re storing all of your food in amongst all that dirt, it could be a health risk. It’s much easier to give the shelves and drawers a quick wipe down every few days or so, and you won’t get any of that mess building up again.
Vacuum cleaners are for cleaning, they can’t possibly get anything dirty, right? Well, not quite. If you don’t look after your vacuum cleaner properly, it might actually be making the house dirtier rather than cleaner. Recent studies have shown that all vacuum cleaners release some level of dust and bacteria back into the room. However, older vacuum cleaners tend to put out a lot more. If you’ve had yours for years, it might still suck up the dirt, but the chances are, it’s shooting out lots of harmful bacteria in the process. That’s why it’s best to get a new one every couple of years, just to be safe. You should also look at the ones that have the best filters. What you’re looking for is one with a high energy particulate air filter; this will filter out any dust and allergens and help the house to stay cleaner.
Watch out for these hidden areas of dirt, and you can make sure that your house is always safe for you and your family.
