Have you ever seen that meme of the cartoon character sitting in a burning room while saying ‘this is fine’? That’s how I often see my life when two young kids are running around. It literally feels like the house is on fire, and so much is happening while I’m trying to relax. So, it got me thinking, how can I relax with kids in the house? Is it even possible?! Maybe this is a mythical quest that will never be solved! Some of you will scoff at the mere idea of relaxation and kids in the same sentence. Nevertheless, it is possible to relax with kids in the house. And, you can do it without locking them in their rooms.
Step 1: Distract the kids
This is a three-step process, and the first stage is simple: distract your kids. Get their attention with a task that can be done by themselves. Set them up with some arts and crafts things or let them run wild outside. We have a wooden playhouse that’s perfect in situations like this as the kids will always be keen to play in it. Or, you could always put on their favourite TV show. It sounds like a cop-out, but you only need them to be occupied for 20 minutes. So, watching one episode of a show isn’t that big of a deal, and it keeps them safe and distracted.
Step 2: Meditate
While your children are distracted, you can find a quiet place in the home to meditate. I won’t pretend to be a meditation expert, but I can vouch that it is very straightforward. My advice is to find a routine to follow, then do it whenever you have time. Essentially, meditation will focus on your breathing and slow down your heart rate. This will help the muscles in your body relax and break free from any tension. In a few moments, you instantly feel calmer. Some people like to meditate sitting down, but I think that lying on a mat or a bed is even better. However, there’s the slight danger you’ll fall asleep and wake up to complete carnage.
Step 3: Consider some supplements
The last step is an optional one for people who have trouble relaxing. If you’re naturally uptight and tense, meditation won’t have much of an effect. You won’t see the benefits because you physically can’t relax. So, think about supplements like CBD gummies that help you relax and feel less stressed. I’m a big fan of aromatherapy for relaxation – the scents of the aroma can help your nervous system ease off and decrease the tension in your body. It’s up to you what supplement you choose; my only guidance is to make it natural. Don’t start taking any relaxation pills as it can set you off down a slippery slope.
Ultimately, that’s all there is to it. I told you it was easy, and this plan can work whenever you need a bit of respite. Distract your kids, then take advantage of this free time to relax. Admittedly, the difficulty depends on how easy it is to complete step one. This is why I included the TV show trick as it works 90% of the time – no kids turn down the TV!
