The struggle of mummy brain is very real and it can lead to some seriously messy situations. Sometimes, you notice little things like forgetting what you were saying halfway through a sentence or walking into a room and forgetting why you’re there. But a more serious case of mummy brain could lead you to put your child’s nappy on over their pants, which obviously has some less than ideal results.
Most mums suffer from this lack of brain power at some point in their parenting journey and it makes it tough to stay on top of things. You need your brain to be sharp to keep up with young kids, but all too often it feels like it’s turned to jelly.
We assume that it’s all down to lack of sleep but although that is a big factor, there’s more to it than that. In fact, studies show that significant changes happen in your brain during pregnancy and after, and that affects your memory. Scientists think that your brain puts all its focus on your baby to improve your capacity to care for them. That’s great, but it does also mean that anything outside of that is blurred and you start forgetting even the simplest things. The good news is, there are some great exercises you can do to boost your brain power and conquer mummy brain for good.
Puzzles are one of the easiest ways to exercise your brain and keep yourself sharp. The great thing is, it doesn’t matter if you’re terrible at puzzles and you never get the answer right, your brain still benefits from it. When you have a spare 5 minutes, you probably want to collapse in front of the TV, but if you can muster the energy to have a go at a puzzle instead, it will work wonders for your brain.
If you’re a new parent, it probably feels like you are constantly on your feet, so extra exercise probably isn’t top of your list of things to do in your spare time. But there is a direct link between physical health and mental health and when your body is in good shape, your brain gets more oxygen and the connections are strengthened. So, you’re far less likely to accidentally leave your keys in the fridge if you do a workout every now and again. You don’t have to go over the top, but try to stay active as much as possible.
Build More Structure
All new parents start off with the best intentions and they think that they’ll stick to a schedule. Then they realise that looking after a newborn is complete chaos and any structure soon collapses. But if you suffer from mummy brain, you have to try to bring at least some elements of structure back. Put your keys and purse in the same place every time, plan meals for the week so you always know what the family is eating, write everything down in your calendar and use reminders in your phone. Having a bit of structure in place will be a huge help.
