As parents we make many rookie mistakes. These mistakes can leave us sobbing like a baby, pulling our hair out in frustration, or longing for the ground to open up and swallow us.


Eventually after enough time has passed we stop rocking in the corner, we are able to laugh about them.  This series is dedicated to the honest parents who admit they sometimes often get it wrong.  After all, I have yet to meet a Pintrest perfect parent in the actual flesh.

Rookie Mistakes of a Mum-to-be


Okay, so as you may have guessed I’m ‘technically’ not a parent yet and have the world of milk and poo awaiting my future. However this doesn’t hinder the fact that soon to be parents can request an early membership to the Rookie Club when it comes to your offspring.


My five things I have learned from conception to pregnancy…


1) Don’t underestimate how long it takes to get pregnant.

Close friends and family of mine have all taken a few years to conceive. My partner and I weren’t in a rush but we had talked about this for a while and considering that it could take the same amount of time for us, we’d thought we’d start trying now. We conceived straight away. I feel incredibly lucky that it was easy for us and I will never take this for granted however we were thinking we’d have a few more months of planning first! Plus we still needed to move house…


2) Don’t take the pregnancy test too early.

If it says you have to wait for 10 days then wait for 10 days. It’s hard when you’re a super impatient person like myself but it’s completely pointless. You waste money on buying multiple tests because you use them all and then don’t believe the ones you have already taken. Is that a line or am I seeing things? What does a faint line mean? WHY CAN’T IT JUST WORK?! Buy a digital test (they are pretty much fail-proof) and do it on the day you’re supposed to. This will result in a clearer result and you’ll be slightly less poor.


3) Don’t think you won’t need maternity clothes just yet.

I won’t have a bump for at least 14 weeks so I don’t need to buy maternity clothes yet right? Wrong. Just because you are not yet showing a little bundle of bumpness, does not mean you can still get away with your usual high-waisted skinny jeans from Topshop. Before your bump really appears, you will be bloated. All the time. This also doesn’t go away no matter how much water you drink or how much you exercise (not that I would really know about the exercise…) I bought my first maternity jeans at around 6 weeks and have never looked back. If anyone tells you that you “don’t need maternity clothes yet” you have my approval to put a sock in their mouth.


4) Don’t stress about every little thing you eat.

There are guidelines absolutely everywhere of what you can and can’t eat during pregnancy. They do this to help you have the healthiest pregnancy you could possibly have but don’t revolve your life around it! The obvious cautions are under-cooked meat, too much caffeine, alcohol and some argue with the runny-egg issue. I personally think these are all fairly reasonable down to the health factors.

However if you’ve had more than one of your daily allowance of coffee, ordered more than you can eat at McDonald’s or just HAD to have that runny egg on your toast on a Sunday morning – IT’S OK. One, two, three, four times is not going to hurt. You are entitled to a little indulgence it’s just recommended that it’s not all day, every day. You’re not a bad person, you CAN eat that!


5) Spend a ridiculous amount of money on different brands of bump cream.

If you’re going to get stretchmarks there is literally absolutely nothing you can do about it. Some lucky ladies can go through pregnancy without encountering a single line on their skin, where others wear their tiger stripes with pride. Although stretch marks are down to your skin personally, if your own mum had stretchmarks you’re more than likely to get them too. There are creams that can reduce the appearance of them but it won’t prevent them appearing or make them go away entirely (if they did for you then please email me the name of this cream and where to buy it!)


I’m sure as I venture further into pregnancy, this list will have grown in size and will equal my every-growing tummy.

    Congrats on the pregnancy, Natalie. All so very true…except the high waisted skinny jeans thing…never quite got into those…even before pregnancy.
