Having a birthday in January sucks.  OK in the great scheme of things there are worse problems to have, but when it comes to birthdays? The ideal time to have one is NOT January, and here’s why…

life love and dirty dishes

1 The Christmas Hangover

In December nobody moans to much about cold weather and dark nights.  It’s all part and parcel of the festive season and twinkly lights.  Come January everyone is officially over winter and craving some summer sun.  Rain rarely looks pretty without twinkly lights.  In January people like to hibernate in their warm cosy houses with PJ’s and slippers.  High heels and queuing for the cloak room aren’t really at the top of anyone’s agenda.

2 The Empty Pockets

January is officially the month where everyone is skint.  If they didn’t overspend at Christmas, they succumbed to the January sales (although lets face it, they might as well call the the December sales, as come 1st of January everything that is left is either tat, or a size six – which wasn’t happening before the Christmas chocolates).  Nobody has any money to come out, and there is a higher-than-any-other-month probability that your birthday gift will be an unwanted Christmas present re-gifted.

3 The Good Intentions

There are some people that make new years resolutions, then there are the really annoying stoic people that actually stick to their new years resolutions.  Which means that if you have managed to cajole people out into the crap weather to part with their remaining cash, everyone is going to be ordering a salad and skipping desert.  No birthday cake for you then.

4 The Heart Break

Depressingly January is the month with the highest divorce rate.  Your friends aren’t going to feel like celebrating when they are nursing a broken heart.  Divorce papers are not on my birthday list.

5 Dry January

Piss. Off.

So there you have it.  Reasons why January is the worst month ever to have a birthday. December babies, I feel your pain, but at least everyone is willing to get pissed for your birthday.  Dry January knocks you off of the top spot.  And August babies don’t even think about complaining that everyone is always on holiday, you get to have birthday BBQ’s.  In the sun.  With Pimms.  And no coats.

This is me on my 30th Birthday, doing dry January because I was pregnant with the big one, and pretending I wasn’t doing dry January because no one knew!

Happy Birthday to all my fellow January babies!

Yep, that’s totally sucky!!! I was one of those idiots who thought I could easily do dry January-what was I thinking? I lasted till the 7th, then realised that dry January+1 threenager+1 soddler=will never be able to give up alcohol. Silly me!! I thought I’d ruined my eldest life by having him a few days before Christmas, but you’ve definitely got the rougher end of the deal! Well, um, try to have a good one…!!!

So with you on this! I feel a bit sorry for my daughter as she was born on New Year’s Day – when she gets older it will be cool as she can go out New Year’s Eve, but until then everyone will be too hungover to escort / accompany excitable children to a party the day after, lol. #fridayfrolics

My birthday is in January too!! And it is directly after New Years when not one flip could be given by anyone! I absolutely agree with everything you say apart from one thing.

You mention that “in January people like to hibernate in their warm cosy houses with PJ’s and slippers” when I would argue that I like to do this every month, all year. Will agree to disagree. As you’re #dreamy.

    Lots of love,

Ok. I’ll tell you a secret. I prefer hibernating too. Shhhh. I was just trying to sound cool, and, you know, like I have a life 😉 Enjoy the almost year long present drought!

Yep. I feel bad for you. Although, I detest January. It’s so miserable and depressing. I’ve always thought this is because Christmas is over and there’s nothing to look forward to. Maybe January wouldn’t be so depressing If I had a birthday in it? Then again, I’ll be 32 this year. So no matter what month my birthday is it’s going to suck

Oh dear, I never thought about that really (I’m a September baby) but you are quite right… Poor you! My eldest son is a February baby though he was originally due in Jan (just lazy) so hopefully we have avoided these issues for him when he’s older! #FridayFrolics

Oh no!! I for one will be drinking more and eating more cake (if that’s possible) to celebrate your birthday. I don’t need much of an excuse to be honest. Happy Birthday!! Getting in there early as I’m sure you will be inundated with Birthday wishes 🙂

A really good friend has a birthday in January and we all went out last weekend. It was the coldest windiest night and I found myself thinking I probably wouldn’t bother if I still lived in the UK. It just always felt like such a hassle but it’s so easy here in Malta even in bad weather. At the risk of you smacking me when we meet in June, may I suggest you move here…I’ll go out and paint the town red for your birthday 🙂

I know exactly what you mean. Mine is the day after tomorrow (21st Jan). It really is a non-event although that might also be because of my age!

All of my kids birthdays are within a month of each other, my two youngest are the 21st and 22nd January and my oldest is xmas eve, none of them ideal. They don’t seem to mind yet, but i am sure they will. Happy birthday when it comes x

I’m the 28th and my son is the 21st – I quite like it – we always do something together with the family – this year it’s bowling and a meal. My little boy’s birthday is the 20th December and literally no one can be bothered with it as they are too busy!!
